the controller mod I wanted, so I started making it

COD4 Native Controller Support

Free, unofficial native controller support for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007). Separate 32-bit ASI modules cover single-player and supported CoD4x multiplayer clients.

How it works

The problem

The Windows PC release does not provide the native controller behavior this project adds. The mod covers movement, looking, actions, menu navigation, a right-stick pointer, button prompts, layouts, and rumble without adding aim assist.

What I ended up doing

The project builds separate 32-bit ASI modules for single-player and CoD4x multiplayer. It uses XInput, C, x86 assembly, CMake, NASM, and PowerShell.

Keeping bad installs out

The installer and adapters check supported executable fingerprints. Unknown or modified game and client builds are preserved and refused instead of receiving runtime patches.

Building it

The repository’s build script creates independent single-player and multiplayer build trees, builds both release artifacts, and runs their CTest suites.

Keeping installs tidy

The manager records package ownership, stops when the game is running, refuses unknown controller add-ons, and removes only files owned by the package. Changed managed files stop removal for review.

Known limits

The package was checked under a separate standard Windows profile, but not on a second physical computer. Steam Deck, Linux, Proton, and direct non-XInput controller modes remain unverified.

Before installing

Steam Input must be disabled for Call of Duty 4 to prevent double or conflicting input. The game and CoD4x are not included. Use an XInput-compatible controller and follow the repository’s installation guide.

Maybe next

I’d like to look into native controller support for Modern Warfare 2 (2009). That’s an idea, not a promised release or feature list.
